Mount Vernon College March 27,1999 The GW Hatchet hosted its third and final major Alumni Reunion of the decade Saturday in March 27, 1999 at at G.W.U.'s newest campus at Mount Vernon College in Washington, DC. Special guest and former Journalism Deptartment Chair, retired Prof. Phil Robbins was honored with a GW Hatchet Alumni Recognition award. A former Washington Star editor, and recently Ombudsman of the Stars & Stripes, Phil dedicated many years to teaching GW students. He took many late-night phone calls from student editors and although his deep voice may have made a lasting impression on many freshman, is beloved and respected by GW alumuni. Phil joined the ranks of former colleagues and students who have received The GW Hatchet's ultimate tribute to those who have given their hearts and minds to developing an independent, accurate and yet passionate student press at the George Washington University.

The National Press Club, Washington DC More than 200 students, alumni and friends of the GW Hatchet student newspaper attended this formal dinner launching The Hatchet Scholarship Fund. It was the second alumni reunion in recent memory - the first was held in May 1993 prior to The Hatchet's incorporation as a non- profit corporation. The event was taped and aired by CSPAN2 later that spring. The evening began with a performance by the GW Troubadours, a student acapella singing troupe. The Master of Ceremonies was Mark Olshaker '72, an author and movie producer; the Key Note address was given by Washington Post Executive Editor Leonard Downie, Jr. Outgoing Editor in Chief Jared Sher '97 awarded student service by honoring Managing Editor (and The Hatchet's living thesaurus for three years) Kynan Kelly. He received the first Charles Puffenbarger Student Achievement Award. Former Editor in Chief Elissa Leibowitz '95 presented three Alumni Achievement Awards to Prof. of Journalism Charles Puffenbarger '64, Newsday Manager Joye Brown '77, and author B.D. Colen '73. GW President Stephen Joel Trachtenberg announced the University's support of the Hatchet Scholarship Fund by offering a dollar for dollar match of donations for the next several years. In addition, GW alumni may earmark donations to the University for The Hatchet's fund.
